... has also been named the colorful city in the Harz, is located on the northern edge of the Harz embedded in the picturesque valleys of Mülental and the mountain river Holtemme.
Local attractions include the castle of Wernigerode, the town hall, which is designed by the architect Thomas Hilleborch and received its characteristic appearance and gained splendid half-timbered houses. Interesting is also the "smallest house ", that are now accessible as part of a museum, or the "crooked house". High above the town is the castle of Wernigerode, and offers great views over the countryside and the Harz landcape up untill the Brocken. The city centre is a closed area with many original architectural as well as many shopping and strolling opportunities. Wernigerode is the starting point of the Harz narrow gauge railway for the journey in the Harz National Park.
